My scooter arrived yesterday. It’s totally amazing. Better than what I expected. Build quality is good. Good storage under the seat, can fit my helmet under there or in the top box. Can go faster than on the website. Not sure how Direct Bikes makes any money at the prices they charge. I’m not complaining though. Looks great. Started first time. I forgot to order a lock, so keeping the bike in my garage, just in case.

for the scooters for direct bikes, hows the insurance on them ?

  3. brianb Said:

Direct Bikes are simply the nicest, most decent bunch of guys to deal with. Nothing is too much trouble and they take great pride in the fact that their scooters are cheap, robust, stylish and a great laugh to razz around town on.

I recently ordered a bike from Direct Bikes. It arrived quickly and was easy to put together. I was a little unsure about how to register the bike but was offered helpful advice when I called Direct Bikes. I’m so happy to be on the road now. I love the bike and it certainly beats the congestion charge. I have recommended Direct Bikes to friends – cool bikes at a fraction of the cost of other retailers. Thank you.

I live in Spain, wanted a cheap scooter to get around. Although Direct Bikes wouldn’t deliver to Spain I had the scooter delivered to a friend in Northampton. Took it back to Spain on my motorhome. Have been riding it for 6 months now. Perfect for getting me around town. Good bike at a nice price.

I’ve been hankering after a scooter for years but simply refused to pay a premium for style. After being recommended I went to scooter.co.uk and bought one – remarkably cheap compared to other makes. I’ve only had it two weeks but it’s glorious and, touch wood, will keep me happy for years.

Hi I’m thinking of buying from Direct Scooter = how’s yours running now – any niggles ?

      • ULISSES Said:

No niggles.. but from time to time you may find some problems. They are not made with first quality parts.. Anyway it’s running well though.. For the price you pay I think it’s a good option.

      • jim c Said:

Thanks Glenn thats really useful – have you had to call on the warranty and if so how did that go for you ?

I wanted a black retro scooter, but unfortunately Direct Bikes had run out of stock so ordered a blue one instead. It was delivered promptly. I got more than what I expected, they included a free top box which is handy. Got it out of the box and on the road. Been riding around for a week. All great, will keep you updated.

Got mine – it came unassembled in a crate but, hey-ho, it was cheap. It took me an hour to put together and it’s lovely. Please note, however, that there is a bit of time taken up with registering the bike and it doesn’t really mention that on the website.

got my bike from direct bikes and its a pleasure to ride although it seems to slow down on its own for no apparent reason when im on full throttle. apart from that its a wicked bike and is nippy too XD

  12. louise Said:

i got my scooter last week and was really easy to put up however it came with a faulty throttle lever and when i tried to kick start it petrol leaked out so they are sending me a replacement throttle and they are gonna send out a mechanic for free. i have not yet started it but hopefully it will be a good ride

  13. andrew Said:

Hi,if anyone has bought a bike from moped.co.uk or scooter.co.uk could you tell me just how flat pack it comes, how much is there to put together as I have no idea on mechanics whatsoever. How many pieces and what pieces need to be assembles, any help would be gratefully received.
    thanks

  14. Retro Scooters Said:

Ordered my scooter from Direct Bikes last week and wasn’t aware it wouldn’t come assembled but it was a piece of cake to put together and the price was too good to miss. Registration took a few days but other than that, everything is excellent and I’d recommend the company to anyone looking for a cheap scooter.

  15. Anton Said:

I got my scooter last week, it comes in a steel frame to prevent damge in delivery. all i had to do was fit the battery. it took around 5 minutes to sort out and then it takes a few hours to charge. im really happy with it, just need to register it. cheap insurance, cheap moped and good quality ***** 🙂

  16. Erica Said:

i am thinking about buying the 50cc sports scooter from direct bikes, does anyone else have it? does it run well? any problems? and how much is insurance for it? thanks

    • Julie Said:

Hi Erica, My hubby got one last year to use for work whilst I was on mat leave and I needed the car! it has been great, no probs whatsoever, really cheap to run – costs £4 to fill the tank, £15 to tax for the year and looks great too – ours is a 50cc sports sccoter in black. really east to register too with dvla. don’t know if you are interested but we are now selling it as i am back at work and we both work at the same office so we are using the car together now – hubby is gutted! The insurance we pay is £19 a month. We are also including a black sporty helmet (worth £40) an outside all weather cover and a top box, screen and a dead lock too! Let me know if you are interested before I advertise it – we have all docs, booklets, paperwork and it is in excellent condition and has only done 500 miles!
We are asking for £400 for the whole lot – the bike cost us £600 delivered, the helmet and other accessories cost over £100 and we will tax it for a full year for you too if you are interested. Hope you get one either way – they are wicked!!!! Thanks, Julie

      • Rob Said:

Hi Julie i’ve been trying to find a cheap scooter to use for comuting into London just like your husband when i came across your comment. i don’t suppose you’ve still got the scooter for sale, it’s been quite a while now.

        Thanx

Thinking of buying my 16yr old daughter a pink retro scooter, has anyone bought one?, if so are you pleased with the colour?

  20. Gina Said:

Just ordered a scooter from Direct Bikes for my daughter for Xmas and I wanted to get some insurance quotes on go compare but can only find the recommended Rampdale that do these bikes. Can anyone recommend any other companies so I can get some comparisson quotes or is this the only company. My daughter is 16 and waiting for her provisional lisence and only has her EMA at present to pay for it (not that she knows yet). Found the quote was alot higher than I thought and when I upped my excess to £100 and had it in a locked building (my house)the the site froze and said they could’t help me. Was thinking of fully comprehensive, mmmmm. Can anyone help.
    Thank You
    Gina

    • Phoebe Said:

      Hi Gina
Direct Bikes says that Bennett is a good site for insurance. I’m not sure how much it is, and I don’t think they give you the quote online.
I’m also 16 and in the process of getting a license and moped… I’m not sure if my parents are nice enough to pay the insurance cause I don’t think I can handle that, but let me know what the quote is so I can have a ballpark figure.

Thinking of ordering the 125cc Lynx scooter from Direct Bikes, need something to commute to and from work on that is cheaper than running a car, trip is about 8 miles each way. Anyone had experience with this bike and would you reccomend it for this?

  22. frank Said:

hello i was thinking of buying a scooter for my sons 16th and i was just wondering are the scooters good quality ? and how hard is it to assemble? thankyou frank

  23. Luke Said:

Does anyone own a retro 50cc – can you carry a passenger? can it handle a passenger or does it struggle? thanks!

  24. Joanne Said:

As a middle aged woman, who has had a full driving license for over 20 years, do I need to do a CBT on a 125cc model bike? Can I just put L plates on and go? How long does it take for number plates to come? Would a 50cc suit me more? I want to ride about 40 miles each day from home to work around Greater London? I live in a block of flats, so will have to leave the scooter fixed to some railing outside, will that put up the insurance greatly? xx

    • harry Said:

      Joanne,

If you wish to ride a 125cc bike/moped/scooter you will need to do a cbt and ride with L plates, although you will not need to do cbt if you are only riding a 50cc bike as you have had your license before feb 2001 but still will need to ride with L plates.

      hope this is helpful.

      harry

      • Joanne Said:

Thanks Harry! Shame about the CBT though. Perhaps the 50cc will have to do then.

      • Phoebe Said:

How does one get L plates?

  25. JC Said:

Can any one tell me where they get insurance from as I have had trouble finding places that recognise the bike, also is the make just direct bikes?
    thanks

    • Phoebe Said:

Bennett’s is supposed to be good.

    • EJ Said:

Try Lexham insurance – they were the cheapest I found

  26. steve Said:

Just wondered where anyone gets there scooters serviced. I am thinking of buying 1 but want to know if there’s an authorised service agent in the York area ? have tried emailing directbikes but got a response saying thst as I am not a customer they cannot tell me that information !!
Not a good first impression from a customer service point of view.

  27. clint Said:

My wife went to CIA insurance(£90), 08448889001 as they were the cheapest and buy a thatcham approved disc lock and chain lock set on ebay for £83 together at time of writing.Direct bikes recommended insurer is very expensive. She bought the 50cc sport and all thats required for registration is a insurance certificate and the bike must go to dvla for inspection(only direct bikes) due to their past history of allowing people to assemble brake&wheel components which are safety critical and supplying bikes with KM per hour and not Mileage speedos. These bikes are cheap and basic quality but for the price it’s the old addage of “you get what you pay for”.Use good quality oil at services and weekly wipe the scooter down with wd40 on a rag or mr sheen to clean components&prevent rust which was on the bike fresh out the box.Treat it kindly and look after it and this should be a fine scooter for the price. When on your property or a secure carpark, use a moped cover to keep it dry in winter as rain will cause lots of problems on the throttle and other moving parts and especially switches.

  28. steve g Said:

Anyone know where my nearest approved service agent for York would be ?

  29. steve Said:

Where in York can I get one of your scooters serviced ?
